The Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is a eco habitat within this great country. To get there you go through miles of plains. In those plains are animals. There is life everywhere. We stop for all sorts of birds, kopjes (rocky outcrops that stick up from nowhere) The migration passes through the plains. Most of the big herds are up in the Northern Serengeti this time of year but we have seen huge amounts of animals wherever we go.
We stop for lunch at the Olduvai Gorge
where the Leakeys spent years digging their 100,000 year old hominids. Dramatic. An hour later we arrive at our Nyumba for the evening. Have I already talked about this? The days pass like a dream. This camp by the crater is beautiful

We spend a day in the the crater, 15 minutes from camp. As we drive down the mountain Robert explains how the animals live here, what the benefits and pitfalls are to the animals that choose to stay here. We come across a sleeping rhinoceros in the first half hour. We wait a while for him to get up (her?) to no avail. But then two other rhinos charge across the plain and pose nicely for us before heading for the hills.
The animals seem to give them a wide berth.
Here's some more crater- with the White Wizard of Warthogs...
